The Beau Hunks Play Original Laurel & Hardy Music on CD |
|||||
|
I am pleased to say that we can now offer the full
range of Beau Hunks' CDs. The Beau Hunks orchestra was named
after the L&H film of the same title. As a " documentary orchestra,"
they specialise in unjustly forgotten American composers of the 20th century.
Under the leadership of Gert-Jan Blom, they started out recreating
the music from the "Laurel & Hardy" comedies. Since their inception in
1992 the Beau Hunks have reconstructed the works of two composers
of these melodies, who were rarely credited in the films.
Leroy Shield(1893-1962) worked as a composer
for the Hal Roach Studios only briefly, but left a rich collection of tunes.
Timeless and toe-tapping tunes by Leroy Shield and Marvin Hatley from the films of the famous comedy team. Lovingly reconstructed and recorded by the Beau Hunks with infectious vivacity. "Uncanny replicas of the originals... a delightful package" (Billboard). Awarded with an Edison. PLAY SAMPLE MP3 Add to PAYPAL Cart

Leroy Shield (1892-1962). Glenn Mitchell (The Laurel & Hardy Encyclopedia):
"Volume 2 is actually slightly better; no mean achievement given the excellence
of its predecessor." Liner notes and art direction by Piet Schreuders. Recorded
in 1993. Edison award nominee.

Double CD Set. VOLUME ONE PLUS TWO! |
|||||
Both "Laurel & Hardy" CDs encased in a beautifully designed slipcase with artwork by cartoonist R. Crumb, who has said of the Beau Hunks' project: "This is music I've been looking for all my life ! A great musical accomplishment." Marvin Hatley(1905-1986) was the creator of the ever-popular "Ku-Ku" theme, universally associated with Laurel & Hardy. As the musical director of the Roach studios, he wrote dozens of songs for the films. Apart from Ronnie Hazlehurts Music Box albums, Sheild and Hatley's melodies were rarely published, recorded or performed. The Beau Hunks have made their faithful note-for-note reconstructions available on CD. Special import- PLAY SAMPLE MP3 Add to PAYPAL Cart |

Ronnie Hazlehurst by Rob Lewis
Ronnie wrote many famous theme tunes for television shows such as Only Fools and Horses, and Last of the Summer Wine, among others. He was a former Musical Director at the BBC and, as such, was closely involved with the Eurovision Song Contest and actually conducted the UK entry on no less than seven occasions.
He also had a great love for not only the films of Laurel & Hardy, but also the musical compositions of Marvin Hatley and Leroy Shields, which compliment them so brilliantly. I always recall watching BBC's The Generation Game and hearing familiar Laurel and Hardy music being played in the background during the games by Ronnie and his Orchestra.
One day Tony Hawes, another Helpmates member, took the late- Peter Elkins and me behind the scenes of ITV's Looks Familiar show, and introduced us to Ronnie, which is how he also came to be a member.
With encouragement from myself and other Sons Ronnie researched into the music of the Laurel and Hardy films and then produced his first album - Laurel and Hardy's Music Box Vol. 1. He used his best BBC musicians and did a wonderful job; something I witnessed first-hand as I was fortunate enough to be invited to sit in on the actual recording. We then launched the album at our Helpmates' Convention in 1979, at Leeds Castle.
Ronnie then joined us for the Hollywood 80 trip, where he actually met the man himself - Marvin T Hatley. Marvin was moved to tears when Ronnie played him the album. This led to a second "Music Box" album which was later released on CD along with Vol.1. Ronnie performed live at another one of our Leeds Castle events, with his whole Orchestra, which made it a great night for all present. Conventioneers in the USA also had the pleasure of seeing and hearing Ronnie, when he played 'live' at the Las Vegas 92 Convention.
'Our Relations' Soundtrack Review
Earlier this week I received a free complimentary signed CD from the Beau Hunks - the long awaited OUR RELATIONS score. As with the previous released by this wonderful orchestra, the CD is accompanied by a detailed booklet (44 pages) containing very rare photos and details about the music for the film. The CD should be commercially available from February 2001.
The CD it self has 35 tracks about 50% of these tracks are made up of themes used in the film as we know it today. The rest of the disc contains music that was PLANNED for the film (and may have been used in deleted material such as the "shaving" sequence and the "Traffic jam" sequence) but not so familiar - in fact it is very un-Laurel and Hardy-like in content, and seems more fitted to the "screwball" comedy of Hollywood. There are still gems to be found including Ku-Ku, the Main theme, Sailors Hornpipe.
In all, a very worthwhile disc of historical importance, but leaves the listener with an uneasy sense of ".....did that really all originate for OUR RELATIONS....." PLAY SAMPLE MP3
